The castle of Queribus
We take one of the roads which were once meant as barriers, one of those coming from the south, from Aragon and all of Spain which once extended up to here. It rises in front of us like an arrow pointed towards the sky, sunk into a mineral landscape, a part of a mountain fashioned by man.
We are quite close when we arrive and already have the impression of being among the summits, from the Pyrenees through Corbières to the sea. Access certainly wasn’t so easy in the days when it had to be impregnable to protect an entire country or the Cathars who sought refuge inside it.
Along the citadel, the thick walls reveal nothing until a breathtaking panorama opens in front of us: the plain of Roussillon down to the Mediterranean and the peaks of the Pyrenees. Hypnotized by the spectacle, we slowly continue to ascend the stairs which seem to disappear into the sky, giving the irresistible impression that it would become even lovelier.
We manage to turn our gaze away from the view before us to discover the powerful fortress. From below it is impossible to imagine its sophisticated architecture, still proudly maintained, nor to comprehend the volumes of the buildings constructed here of the same stone. Preserved by the elements, a number of elements still bear witness to the daily life which took place here.
Inside the keep, the hall of pillars and its fan form vaulted ceiling gives on to a stairway which heads both upwards and downwards. We decide to continue ever upwards, obviously, to the highest point of the castle to just look around us. Perpignan is at our feet, on the water, we are flying above Corbières and can touch the Pyrenees with our fingertips. We are at one with the sky; it is impossible to leave, we feel so well here; we have the impression of being on top of the world, the world of Quéribus.
